Aita al-Shaab, a Lebanese village on southern borders, is another example in which the reconstruction process brought with it many harsh experiences, contributing to the formation of a negative perception of what reconstruction entails.

The experience of Aita al-Shaab may seem unique and limited, but it is capable of representing what happened in many southern villages and towns after the 2006 war. This could be due to the bulldozing of the old neighborhood and the effort to benefit from compensation, or the  Solidere-like approach to reconstruction, or the many stories we heard from returnees and their experiences during the war, highlighting the meaning of losing their home, their village, and their community. We will attempt to address these three levels—heavy, deep, and difficult—through this text, based on an article published in Al-Muhandis magazine in 2007, while exploring the experiences of a group of urban planners who volunteered to support reconstruction efforts in the village immediately after the war.
