Enacting a law to extend rental contract deadlines: An insufficient measure to safeguard the right to housing

In response to the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon, the Lebanese government enacted a new law to suspend legal, judicial, and contractual deadlines from October 8, 2023, to March 31, 2025. This measure aims to protect citizens’ rights during crises, echoing past laws implemented during emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the law raises concerns about its effectiveness, particularly in addressing housing insecurity and protecting vulnerable groups, such as tenants under old rental agreements. While offering temporary relief, the law highlights Lebanon’s ongoing reliance on short-term fixes instead of sustainable policies to tackle long-term housing and economic challenges.
