On Monday, June 24, the deputies of the “National Moderation” bloc visited the Minister of Interior, Bassam al-Mawlawi, to urge him to allow municipalities to issue building permits for buildings that do not exceed 150 square meters, in order to “meet the needs of citizens, especially in Akkar, Minieh, Dennieh and all of the North.” As a result of the meeting – according to the National News Agency – Mawlawi confirmed to the deputies that he “is in the process of issuing a decision authorizing municipalities to issue building permits, within the next two days, to manage citizens’ affairs.”
How does this decision reflect on the state’s approach to public safety, knowing that this is not the first time the ministry puts such a responsibility into the hands of the municipalities, thus turning access to housing, yet again, to an endowment offered to the loyal followers?
