Following the proposal of the Lebanese Forces MPs in February 2022, the “Free Patriotic Movement” MPs presented another proposal on March 21, 2024, titled “Establishing the Sovereign Fund for Preserving State Assets and Managing Them”. The tasks of this fund include developing plans to activate state assets, improve their investment, and enhance service quality. While the forms of these proposals may vary, they share the same essence: the risk of privatizing public assets and land by treating the state’s role as that of a company. State assets should be managed and safeguarded for future generations, not for profit-driven interests. Neglecting the social and environmental roles of state properties further compounds this risk. Privatization is often portrayed as the sole solution amid Lebanon’s crisis, but this narrative hides the true motive of protecting banks and major depositors at the expense of society.
