After activists have started mobilizing against the demolition of the “Public Heritage Stairs” of Aley, we write this commentary to show how a section of these stairs fall on private property. The stairs’ destruction then, is allowed by the municipality of Aley in favor of the private interests of the landowner instead of having the public interest in mind. Upon the destruction of the stairs, the landowner will benefit from the maximum allowed built area and can thus maximize his profits at the expense of the public good.
