Joan Chaker is a historian and economist currently working on her PhD dissertation, “A Muleteers’ History of Global Capitalism: Social, Environmental, and Cultural Transformation in Nineteenth-Century Lebanon.” More generally, her research interests range from the legal history of money, to the history of capitalism, and Ottoman history. In a previous incarnation, she worked as a money-markets trader between Amsterdam and London.
